How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most precious experiences—and capturing those first fleeting moments through photography is a beautiful way to preserve this magical time. If you're preparing for a newborn session, you might be wondering what to expect or how to get ready. Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered!

Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, these simple tips will help make your session smooth, relaxed, and full of heartfelt memories.

1. Schedule Early (but Flexibly)

The ideal time for a newborn session is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this window, babies are typically sleepier, more curled up, and easier to pose. I recommend booking your session during your second or third trimester, and we’ll set a tentative date based on your due date. Once baby arrives, we’ll confirm the best day and time.

2. Keep Baby Sleepy and Cozy

Sleepy babies are the secret to those peaceful, curled-up poses you see in newborn galleries. Here’s how you can help your little one snooze through the session:

  • Feed baby right before the session (either at home or upon arrival)

  • Keep them awake for a little while beforehand with a bath or some playtime

  • Dress baby in a loose, easy-to-remove outfit (avoid anything that goes over the head)

Don’t worry if baby gets fussy—we take our time with feeding breaks, cuddles, and soothing whenever needed.

 3. What to Bring to the Session

Here’s a helpful checklist of items to pack:

  • Extra diapers and wipes

  • A pacifier, even if baby doesn’t regularly use one

  • An extra bottle or formula (if not breastfeeding)

  • Favorite blankets or heirloom items you’d like to include

  • A change of clothes for parents (just in case)

If your session includes siblings, bring snacks, quiet toys, and maybe a helper to keep older kids entertained during downtime.

 4. Keep Outfits Simple and Neutral

Newborn sessions shine when the focus is on baby. Soft, neutral tones and textures photograph beautifully and won’t distract from those tiny features. I provide a variety of wraps, props, and accessories—but if you have something special in mind, let me know!

For parents and siblings:

  • Choose simple, coordinated outfits in soft colors

  • Avoid logos or busy patterns

  • Think soft fabrics like cotton, linen, or knits

5. Relax and Trust the Process

Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours, allowing time for feeding, soothing, and gentle posing. My priority is your baby’s comfort and safety. Every movement is done with care and patience.

I work at baby’s pace—and yours. You don’t have to worry if everything doesn’t go “perfectly.” Some of the most meaningful photos come from real, in-between moments.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for your newborn session doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and a whole lot of love, we’ll capture the moments you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

If you're expecting or recently welcomed a little one, I’d love to help document this sweet chapter in your story. Reach out with any questions or to book your newborn session—I’m here to make it a beautiful and stress-free experience.
